About
I’m a researcher in social media and cultural policy at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research at Birmingham City University. I’m doing a PhD full time with the Centre, in which I’m looking at the social media use of creative and cultural workers.
My research questions are:
- What is the role of social media in the everyday lives of creative and cultural workers?
- How is expertise performed on social media?
- What insights can both of these questions provide about the nature of contemporary creative and cultural work?
My main aim is to find out the role of social media in creative workers’ everyday lives and creative practice. I’m looking at expertise because of the growing prevalence of ‘experts’ in the UK creative industries and I’m interested in how this may be communicated/manifest on social media. I’m also particularly interested in issues around labour (creative labour and digital labour, and tensions between the two) and self-branding on social media.
